Studies on the mechanism of cortisone-induced metastases of transplantable mouse tumors.

چکیده
During the course of investigations on the rela tive therapeutic effectiveness of various bacterial polysaccharide fractions on “metastatic― pul monary tumors induced by the intravenous injec tions of ascites tumor cells in Swiss mice and on the protective ability of cortisone and hydro cortisone in combating the toxicity of the bacterial products (16), it was noted that widespread blood borne metastases occurred with Krebs-II carci noma but not with Sarcoma 87 (Table 1). On the Parallel Behavior of Cancer and Bacterial Cells in the Same Host: Experiments with Cortisone and a Transplantable Mouse Tumor †
Of the numerous and important effects of cortisone recognized thus far, this paper is primarily concerned with two. One is the inhibition of a primary tumor growth with the concurrent promotion of metastases; the second is the initiation of infection by saprophytic bacteria latent in tissues. The present study has been designed to observe the simultaneous occurrence of these two phenomena in th...
متن کاملEFFECT OF IRON OVERLOAD ON 7, 12-DIMETHYLBENZ (A) ANTHRACENE-INDUCED SKIN TUMORIGENESIS
Iron overload is known to occur in the West European and American population due to the consumption of iron-rich diets. On the other hand, genetic disorders leading to iron overload are also known. Iron overload leads to increased peroxidation and disruptive disintegration of lipid-rich membranes, and predisposes humans for an enhanced risk of cancer induction. In experimental animals iron ...
متن کاملDifferences in the effects of host suppression on the adoptive immunotherapy of subcutaneous and visceral tumors.
A syngeneic transplantable sarcoma induced in C57BL/6 mice, MCA 105, was used in studies to examine host suppression on the adoptive immunotherapy of established intradermal and experimentally induced pulmonary and hepatic metastases. Fresh immune splenocytes were generated from mice immunized to the MCA 105 tumor by a mixture of viable tumor cells and Corynebacterium parvum. The adoptive immun...
متن کاملA new transplantable mouse liver tumor of spontaneous origin.
A transplantable primary liver tumor 1st observed in a 2-month-old female Swiss-Webst er mouse is described. Morpho logically, it was poorly differentiated. It was easily converted into an ascitic form. The tumor grew rapidly and uniformly with out regression in 100% of Swiss-Webster mice after the 2nd transplant generation. Several characteristics of this tumor distinguish it from other transp...
متن کاملInduced resistance to an indigenous transplantable mouse tumor.
Although the literature contains many refer ences to successful attempts to immunize animals against transplantable tumors, few deal with transplantable spontaneous tumors in inbred strains, and, in general, the results of these latter experiments have been negative. Aptekman and his co-workers (1-3), in a series of studies with an alcohol-soluble extract of methylcholanthrene-induced transplan...
